I was doing my running at the school gym when the TV function of the threadmill showed an episode of Stories of Love, a series of single episode stories. Watching it gave me quite a couple of surprises.
First was the acting from Rebecca Lim and Dick Su. Watching Channel U shows where he usually play goofball roles previously, I was impressed that Dick Su has also the range to play the straight ordinary guy (kinda remind me of John Cusack). On the other hand, Rebecca Lim shows the potential to be one of the most versatile actress in Singapore, playing a Vietnamese girl.
Secondly, I thought the writing was pretty good, allowing me (the viewer) to be drawn into the characters even though it's only a one hour episode. Barring a few unrealistic aspects - Ah Bengs beating up people in public in broad daylight (which is unlikely to happen in reality), having the beautiful Rebecca Lim playing a Vietnamese bride (which will NEVER happen in reality), I thought it was funny, sweet and touching.
All in all in was always nice to see good local english shows on Channel 5 compared to the other shit that we've been given lately - Maggi and Me, After Hours, Lifeline (which always boggles me why it was renewed for a second season). I will be keeping an eye on this series, while I await the new seasons of House and Heroes.
