welcome to the world of pretentiousness

Went for my SMU interview on Saturday. It was not the usual one-on-one interview but a group interview which means you get interviewed together with the other candidates - the very ones who are competing with you to get a place in the university. Obviously I had expected some form of competition during the interview, but not the pretentiousness coming from some of them.

Interviewer: So why did you apply for this course?

Candidate #1: Oh, because I always have an interest in informative systems... the ability to integrate business and technology...

Interviewer: But you also applied for other universities - why bother to come to us?

Candidate #1: ...

Candidate #1: Oh, because that is what my parents wanted me to do. My real passion lies in this course. Basically I applied for that other course just to appease them. (All this while maintaining a straight face.)

There is also the wide-eyed, always attentive and responsive type... the kind that trys too hard.

Interviewer: ... so you guys understand?

Candidate #2: Oh yes sir.

Interviewer: ... ready for the next segment?

Candidate #2: Oh yes definitely.

(Interviewer cracks an unfunny joke.)

Candidate #2: HAHAHAHA.

Oh please, gimme a break.
